So David Tennant and Catherine Tate have announced that they are to star in the latest big budget Shakespeare production to hit the West End. This has caused much excitement and the near collapse of the booking system for tickets. It has also caused some consternation from the, how shall I put it, Luvvie community, who see it as just another cash cow, and not true to how the bard would have wanted it. Well they can bugger right off in my humble opinion. Shakespeare was the populist drama of his day, crowds flocked to see it, and crowds loved it. So what if that for many of them, the highlight of the performance will be the hanging around the Stage door for a glimpse of Mr Tennant? If this is how we get young people enthusiastic and engaged with the Arts then surely this can only be a good thing. I have seen 15 year old girls bubbling over with excitement at the announcement, Twitter and Facebook full of enthusiasm...and mainly from young people, who lets face it, we all suspect are only interested in the X Factor et al. I am thrilled that they are doing it, and even more thrilled that it is causing a buzz of excitement. The Arts are taking a bit of a hammering at the moment, and the true results of the cust will not be seen for a while, but in the meantime, lets celebrate this enthusiasm and excitement for theatre, and hope that this is just the beginning. We are all going as a family, and cannot wait.
