Just been watching Newsnight in which they discussed the power of social media in recent riots and uprisings the world over. Whilst I doubt that it has created revolutions that we recognise as such I think it has certainly assisted in communicating what is happening. I have, in the past, attended demonstrations where things have happened but nothing has been reported. This is not necessarily possible today as we saw recently with the student protests. We found out what was going on from twitter and YouTube whilst the major networks seemed to be editing the events. I am not sure I really care to what extent the critics think this has changed the world, but I truly feel like it has changed mine. As the furore continues about my local mp I wonder quite how much the ability of social media to bring like minded people together has contributed to finding out what approaches the truth. I also wonder what we might have found out about incidents like the miners strike for example had we been able to employ twitter. Whatever people really think about it's impact I genuinely believe it to be a good thing.
