Tuesday 10th January 2012

It was supposed to be a day of dull admin etc, but a trip to the bank and a bit of shopping put pay to that.  I did however feel that I had earned a couple of hours off, as we have had an excellent start to the year.  I purchased a new coat today.  This is always quite a statement to make as far as I am concerned.  My old second hand leather coat has really been falling to bits, but I wanted something a little lighter, that was going to be warm, waterproof and of course cheap.  I managed to find one, that is fine, but now of course, I want something long and stylish so that I can pretend to be Sherlock.  Talking of which, we have only just discovered the remake of Sherlock, and it's rather fun.  I was never really a fan of the original books, having tried them at school, and I also hated the TV series from when I was younger with Jeremy Brett in the starring role.  This seems to have a little more about it, and is rather funny in places.  I watched the recent episode with interest as there was a bit of a Twitter Hoo Hah about the character of Irene Adler and the apparent sexist portrayal.  I did not think that it was an offensive portrayal at all, but to read some of the comments you would think that it was one of the most blatant of sexist demonstrations known to human kind.  The character appeared naked.  It was a comedic moment, where the character used her obvious charms to make the to male characters squirm.  She had the upper hand in the situation!  I think sometimes people look for things to be offended about, and perhaps I do at times as well.  I found a book of war poems today for 99p.  This will be an excellent basis for some of the work we are doing on the War play.
